"Genres are great because they fulfill reader expectations. We buy certain books because we have enjoyed similar stories in the past. Reading these novels gives us a sense of belonging, of sitting down with an old friend and knowing we’re on familiar ground. There is also a camaraderie between readers who follow the same genres."
These are just some of the many genres available to you. If you have chosen to explore genre, you will choose one specific genre to explore in depth. This means you will need to research what the standards are for that genre and create a page in your Writer's Portfolio where you define and outline those requirements for the genre. This should include the following:
- A definition of the genre
- Who the audience typically consists of
- What are the normal tropes and characteristics of the genre
- What are some famous pieces from the genre
- Something you have read from the genre and a review (written or video review) of that piece.
**In your review, you should tell us what about this piece demonstrates the genre. You should have a clear understanding of that genre and what is expected in that genre.**
- Why you are interested in writing for this genre.
Then, you will need to try your hand at writing within this genre.
